12:16 p.m. At approximately 12:18 p.m., officers with the Ridgeland Police Department responded to Thomas Heyward Academy, located at 1727 Malphrus Road, in reference to a report of a juvenile in possession of a handgun on campus. Witnesses reported observing a student displaying a firearm inside a locker room. The juvenile was safely detained, and the firearm was secured without incident. Further investigation determined that a second juvenile, a 14-year-old male student, had brought the handgun to school after taking it without permission from his guardian. Both juveniles were transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. The 15-year-old male has been charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun, pointing and presenting a firearm, and possession of a weapon on school property. The Ridgeland Police Department continues to work closely with school officials to ensure the safety of students and staff. This remains an active investigation.
