The Town of Ridgeland Youth Council gives local students an opportunity to engage in civic leadership, discuss issues that matter to young people, and share recommendations that can help shape the future of the community. The program is designed to encourage student involvement, develop leadership skills, and provide meaningful experience in local government.
The mission of the Town of Ridgeland Youth Council is to create a council made up of local high school students who will discuss issues important to youth and develop recommendations to present to Town Council and their schools.
The Ridgeland Youth Council is designed to:
Student Council members will be appointed by school administration for a term that generally follows the school year. There is no limit to the number of students who wish to serve on the Youth Council.
The Youth Council will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Meeting dates and times may be adjusted at the discretion of the Youth Council.
Agenda topics and issues will be selected by Youth Council members at the beginning of each school year.
At the first meeting of each school year, the Mayor of Ridgeland will select a Youth Council Mayor and a Mayor Pro Tempore, whose duties will reflect those of Town Council leadership.
The Mayor of Ridgeland will serve as advisor and parliamentarian. The Youth Mayor will appoint a council member to give the invocation on a rotating basis. Meetings will be conducted in accordance with the established procedures of the Town Council.
Any ordinances or resolutions passed by the Youth Council will be submitted to the Town Council for consideration.
Participation by all students is encouraged, and all Youth Council meetings are open to the public.
